Collecting the Story of Día de Los Muertos in Sacramento

For over eight years, Sol Collective, the Center for Sacramento History, and the Sacramento History Museum have partnered to celebrate Día de Los Muertos in Old Sacramento. This year, while we will still be honoring the tradition of the event, our celebration will look different due to COVID-19 and social distancing.

For 2020, we want to collect your stories so we can trace the history of Día de Los Muertos in our community and show how it has evolved and grown. What did early celebrations look like? Who were among the early participants? Why is it important? What does this celebration mean to you?

Please contribute digital images, films, and objects that tell your Día de Los Muertos story. We will be utilizing what you share with us in an exhibit that will be on display around Old Sacramento and at the Sacramento History Museum in October. We will also be creating a permanent archive of what we collect at the Center for Sacramento History. Your contributions will help document Día de Los Muertos in the Sacramento region so its story will be known to future generations. Please help us preserve your history.

The Center will review all material and at its discretion may edit submissions. We are not obligated to include all submissions in this project or in our permanent collection.

We are also accepting physical objects, photographs, and documents for later donation. Complete the form below and our staff will contact you after the shelter in place is lifted to discuss possible donation of your items to our permanent collection.
